There are many types of souvenir jewellery around to collect; from Georgian & Edwardian ‘World Tour’ items, to a whole range of British Royal Family events. But one of the, sadly often, overlooked items that we personally collect are Vintage Silver and Enamel Travel Shield Charms.
Originally popularised with a rise in post-war holiday marking in the 1950’s by the 1970’s these charms could be purchased almost everywhere. From UK counties, to seaside towns, national parks, cathedrals, zoos and even the Gretna Green Blacksmiths Shop.
Usually made from either 800, 835 or (in the UK) 925 silver and then fronted with a flat enamel picture to represent the place, alongside the place name. Some British made examples feature a more detailed silver and baked enamel design to create a detailed relief.
There are many popular ways to collect these charms the most common being the ‘Places I’ve Visited’ option, though for the more well travelled the ‘Places I’ve Lived’ can also make a great collection too. We have also seen collections of different designs for the same location, places such as London, Paris or Rome are fantastic for these.
For someone looking to start collecting vintage jewellery the travel charms are an ideal entrance point, as they are rarely expensive – in fact due to their size and low silver weight prices per item can often sit between £5 & £10. You can also find them all over the place, from our own store to antiques centres, flea markets and even in a log cabin at the top of the highest mountain in Germany!
